I must say of all the MCs Shi Hao definitely has the best battle transformations. This one was so cold. He put the clan on blast, took away the stone, and transformed mid-air while bringing out his freaking throne. All the while making an announcement.

Not to be heartless, but he definitely should've killed that damn girl. I truly can't stand ingratitude. And I really don't care if her grandfather is being held captive. Grandpa is probably in on it, and well, no shade Grandpa has lived a long life. And for someone so powerful, she is too weak and indecisive

This kind of idea of being pulled in both directions is a common theme in Chinese wuxia series. Do you do your duty, or do you back your friend up? Sometimes those two things can align, sometimes they can't.

I don't think it was really portrayed that well here, but it isn't a simple decision. In fact, it was so poorly portrayed here that we feel nothing for the tough decision the girl had to make.

That's why SH is my fav MC amongst the current donghuas on air now. Not only does he not conform to the norm, he's also a no-nonsense character. He just slays it every time!

I disagree, and feel it absolutely can compare with Wanmei Shijie or Fanren Xiu Xian Chuan. Xian Ni was an awesome manhua, and if they continue doing the donghua well, then it will only get better and better. In my personal opinion, Xian Ni is already one of the best ones out there.

To be 100% clear, Fanren is hands-down my favourite donghua thus far. However, Xian Ni certainly ranks up there with it.

the reason i said it cant compare is cause its too early to tell. so far Xian Ni is excellent but the other 2 have history. if xian ni continues like this for 100 eps then yeah it can absolutely compare or even surpass them

See, when you explain it like that, I absolutely agree. Except for the part where Xian Ni possibly becomes better than Fanren. While I definitely feel it deserves to be up there with it, I'm too biased towards Han Li.

Wanmei Shijie is pretty awesome, and Shi Hao is great and all, but there comes a time when the whole "I'm constantly more badass than anyone" gets a bit old. Fortunately this series does it really well, which is why it hasn't gotten old for me yet.

However, my personal favourite MC would be Han Li from Fanren Xiu Xian Chuan. He's a breath of fresh air from the common xianxia MC whom is crazy strong from the onset, or gifted with memories/experience from a past life, or blessed with luck and fortunate encounters, etc.

It seems our preferences are on the exact polar opposite. Lol!! But I can't deny that the donghua Han Li is a 180 degree upgrade from the novel Han Li. In the novel, Han Li puts me off with his selfish and overly guarded behaviour. In fact, he was known as "Run Run Han" by the Chinese fans due to his constant running away from trouble attitude. But the donghua turns his selfishness (and cowardice) to a reclusive person who is just careful and meticulous, one who thinks before he acts. His better be safe than sorry personality is displayed with such humanity and depth that you can't help root for him. For that reason, Fanren is my fav donghua right now but my fav MC is still Shi Hao.

The donghua SH unfortunately wasn't even half of the novel SH. The novel explains in such details that you almost feel sorry for him that you would want him to stop torturing himself. His goal is to achieve perfection in every level however difficult or tormenting it is, to ensure there's no flaw in his cultivation whereas most ppl would have moved on to the next level the moment they're strong enough. That's the main reason why SH (almost) always wins. There's also very few plot armour in the battles and he's not always as OP as the donghua portrays because he literally fights nail and tooth to win in most cases. But the donghua doesn't go into such breadth and depth, and their constant fights where SH doesn't seem to raise a sweat, give many audience the impression that he's just badass and invincible. They also fail to highlight his goal why he always ends up in a fight.

SH has a very clear sense of purpose and goals compared to Han Li, whose goal is to cultivate immortality. SH does not want to cultivate immortality just for immortality sake but he wants to keep his family and friends alive as he journeys to greatness. He was so troubled when he saw a vision of a charred Willow Tree (Willow God), while he stood all alone at the apex of humanity. So, all he wants is to change the future, to carve out an undying road for everyone he cares for.

So yeah.. my take is: No donghua makes its MC so appealing like Fanren. From the script to the animation and graphics, everything screams perfection (almost).

But if I were to be neutral and unbiased just based on the novels, Shi Hao is a much rounder, multi-layered and more charismatic character than Han Li despite their respective flaws.

Your explanation makes a lot of sense given the context. Shi Hao is one of my favourite MC's, but he's reached a point in his strength where he's on top of the world, and we're enjoying him stomp tons of people. To be clear, he earned this, and we all know that. Which is actually a big part of why I don't mind his overwhelming strength and seemingly no-difficulty method of taking out the competition. It's just that I also like seeing MC's more like how you described Han Li, or at least the donghua version, as you say.

Shi Hao feels like the underdog who you root for because he's suffered so much without any just cause. However, he's gone from underdog to top dog, and even still has the Super Goddess on his side. Who could possibly not want to follow his journey and watch him mete out justice? Wanmei Shijie takes the "OP MC" premise and does it exceptionally well. I've not really followed the source content of Wanmei, but have heard many similar high praises for Shi Hao as a novel character. On the other hand, Fanren (donghua at least) has done such a fantastic job making the MC relatable (and per your own description): "careful and meticulous, one who thinks before he acts. His better be safe than sorry personality is displayed with such humanity and depth that you can't help root for him." to which I absolutely agree.

My point is, I hold both these series on a pedestal for different reasons. You described it really well above, so I take it you're fully on the same page; albeit slightly different in opinion on whom you prefer.

I think this is more like a cultural difference. The Chinese especially in traditional theme always place their kins with high importance regardless of what they had done. Only in extreme cases would a family member disown another. In this case, SH longs for a family. He’s been cruelly deprived of a family’s care and love, so cutting off ties was never an option. But I was frustrated that he gave his supreme bone to a non-deserving brother. It’s actually worse in the novel because his idiot of a brother indirectly asked for it at his deathbed.

As for those chicks that weren’t there during his death, it’s again closely related to them sticking with their kins. Who is SH really to them? A crush or a love interest at most. If their family insists on the whole clan leaving the lower realm, who are they to disobey?

I don’t agree with Yunxi being so weak in this situation despite knowing fully well that it’s her clan that burned the bridges. That’s a dilemma she was in and she failed to make the ethical decision, not that her decision to stand by and protect her family is wrong, but morally it’s the Celestial Clan that is in the wrong.

Yunxi never helped Youyu atleast in the novel. It was a full 1v1 duel and even Youyu's transformation was solo.. Also maybe it's more dramatic effect but Yunxi was never suppose to draw her sword to Shi Hao. She was blatantly and desperately trying to help him escape, in fact it was so obvious that the onlookers and the Celestial Clan noticed her actions lol. She was pretty empathetic in the novel and Shi Hao reacted warmly to her actions as well.. but here they made it like a Romeo and Juliet kind of scenario xD

yes, I know about that and I completed this novel but it was too much boring except for pursuing powers and becoming emperor there was no decent romance at all...but yea I remember now but they changed the story a bit to make it more emotional. as for capturing qing yi at that time his master was also present.I can't wait to see heavenly tribulation lightning here and that pool
